What I am giving up for lent....

So I realize Ash Wednesday was several days ago and I really should have had this picked out before now. While I was at church this morning Pastor Ed preached about something that really hit close to home and subsequently I have decided to take it personally and then what I wanted to give up to lent came to me in his sermon.

Pastor Ed is an amazing speaker and I love going to church to get the word of God and this week was no different. Today he spoke about slander. Slander meaning 'gossiping', talking about someone to keep them down, telling the truth - but not the WHOLE truth.

I myself have participated in the act of slander, by gossiping about someone, talking down about someone, reading celebrity trash blogs or watching TMZ. It makes us feel good to kick someone while they are down, but who are we really fooling. It's cancer for the soul. So for lent I have decided to give it up and hopefully make it a forever thing. From now on I promise that I will not participate in the act of slander, by either committing the offense myself, witnessing the offense and not standing up for the offended or simply watching it on TV.

With all the debauchery and depravity going around in this world, I certainly don't want to add to it, or allow it to continue to happen around me. It's a simple thing to live without....but it will be hard because we are born to sin and it's so much fun to commit slander, Pastor Ed said....but I promise to do my best to remove this from my day to day life.

I will plant myself in the house of God and become a flourishing olive tree.
